Board of Trustees
The Ahkwesáhsne Mohawk Board of Education (AMBE) was created in 1985 by the Mohawk Council of Akwesásne (MCA). AMBE is responsible for providing educational and Child Care services to the Akwesásne Mohawk Community, including 3 Child Care Centers and 3 schools that offer K4 to Grade 8 education; coordination of secondary education service in partnership with surrounding local school boards; adult education services; and post-secondary education and assistance. The Akwesáhsne Mohawk Community includes about 13,000 peoples, and borders on the Canadian Provinces of Ontario and Quebec and the American State of New York.
The Ahkwesáhsne Mohawk Board of Education is composed of six trustees, with two elected representatives from each of the three districts of Akwesásne: Kawehnó:ke, Kaná:takon, and Tsi Snaíhne. The trustees work alongside Chiefs from the Mohawk Council of Akwesásne’s Education Portfolio to shape and support the educational goals of our community.
As a governing body, the AMBE Board of Trustees sets policy, oversees the strategic direction of the education system, approves budgets, and ensures the delivery of quality education across AMBE schools. The Board works closely with the AMBE administration to ensure that our shared vision is implemented effectively and that our students are positioned for success.
The success of our Board is reflected in the success of our students — through graduation rates, post-secondary enrollment, and those who return to give back to Akwesásne as educators, professionals, and leaders.
