Mohawk Language & Culture
The AMBE Mohawk Language and Culture Program has grown to 14 passionate professionals who support Mohawk language revitalization and cultural learning throughout the AMBE school system. This growth reflects the program's expanding capacity to provide meaningful learning experiences that strengthen students' cultural identity, support educators and engage families as well as the wider community.
Mohawk Language & Culture Offerings:
- Harvest Ceremony
- Midwinter Ceremony
- Cultural Celebration
- Strawberry Ceremony
- Classroom Resources
These experiences provided students with opportunities to learn through traditional teachings while supporting the integration of Mohawk language and culture into everyday learning. Curriculum development remained a key focus, with continued creation of Cultural Studies and Science teacher guides. These resources are being carefully developed to ensure that the knowledge they contain is accurate, authentic and culturally relevant. Once complete, they will provide educators with practical resources to incorporate Mohawk perspectives across the curriculum and enrich student learning.
The program also expanded opportunities for language learning beyond the classroom through innovative digital communication. The Program Support Officer developed Mohawk language content for Facebook and YouTube providing students, families staff and community members with daily opportunities to hear, see and use the language. Mohawk Language & Culture is pleased to offer signs at the Bank of Montreal, Peace Tree Branch, translated and recorded into Mohawk. If you want to hear the recordings, all you have to do it scan the QR Code to hear the Mohawk Language.
Supporting these initiatives, Digital Recourse Developers combined their knowledge of the Mohawk language and culture with creative design to produce engaging digital resources and original artwork. Their work enhances student learning while ensuring that educational materials reflect authentic Mohawk knowledge and cultural teachings.
Together these initiatives continue to strengthen the preservations, promotion and revitalization of the Mohawk language and culture by supporting learners, educators, families and the community through culturally grounded programming, curriculum development and innovative digital resources.
Don't forget to follow the Mohawk Language Facebook page to learn daily phrases and other language resources in development for future generations.
